NIO or (The National Institute of Oceanography) with its head office at Goa, and local centers at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Kochi, is one of the 38 basic laboratories of the CSIR or so called Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi. National Institute of Oceanography was established on first of January 1966 next to the IIOE or International Indian Ocean Expedition in early sixties. The institute has developed now into a big laboratory of oceanography of global repute. The emphasis of research has been on perceiving and comprehending the distinctive oceanographic features that the North Indian basin proposes.
